Nearly every black gay club in Atlanta features hip hop music every weekend, but some people older than 30 might prefer some Old School flavor. A pair of black gay party promoters are teaming up to offer just that by kicking off a monthly series of parties with a June 21 event hosted by R&B legend Chaka Khan. She will appear at Club 714 following her concert at Philips Arena.

“It’s definitely a throwback to the days of Crystal Waters, Cheryl Lynn, Aretha, Patti — all the classic soul performers,” says Greg Douglas, head of Invictus Entertainment. The Chaka Khan appearance marks the beginning of a partnership between Invictus and WassupNATL to offer a back-in-the-day party.

“There’s a void here — you have a lot of professional men in this city and they’re dying for alternative events,” Douglas says. “We’re going to be doing these monthly events for the older demographic the third Saturday of every month.”

Douglas used to work as a booking agent for Khan, and recently approached his old boss about reaching out to her gay fans. She is expected to mingle with the crowd and sign copies of her latest CD, “Fuck This,” Douglas says.

“She really wants to build her brand in the black gay community, and thank them for the support,” he adds.
