  Letter to the Editor

Atlanta’s busy fall events calendar starts with a bang this weekend, and promises to keep schedules full right up until the holidays.

The season begins with a tickling of gay Atlanta’s funny bone. Popular comedian Kathy Griffin returns to the Fox Theatre with her boisterous and off-color brand of comedy on Sept. 5.

Also taking place this weekend is the Atlanta Cotillion Ball on Sept. 6, where hundreds of gay men make a one-night-only appearance in drag to benefit AID Atlanta. This year’s Cotillion Ball, whose theme is “Un Ballo en Machera,” is set as an Italian-inspired mask party for the first time, adding a bit of intrigue to the fundraising juggernaut, which last year raised more than $100,000 for AID Atlanta.

Rounding out the weekend is MEGA Family Project’s annual family picnic on Sept. 7. Held in Decatur’s McCoy Park, the picnic for families headed by gay parents features grilled food, lots of games, and the opportunity to socialize.

The laughs continue Sept. 9 when Emmy Award-winning lesbian comic Judy Gold brings her “25 Questions for a Jewish Mother” act to Center Theatre for a two-week run. Gold also makes a Sept. 19 appearance at Outwrite Bookstore & Coffeehouse, and teams with the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation to host a fundraiser for GLAAD at the Marcus Jewish Community Center.

Good times mix with serious business later in the month at the Atlanta Stonewall Democrats’ “ENDA Summer Party” at the Tribute Lofts downtown. The fundraiser is designed to draw attention to the Stonewall Democrats’ efforts to pass the federal Employment Non-Discrimination Act, and to energize locals for the upcoming election.

“We’re trying to expose more people to the entire political process and get people more involved in our community,” says Kyle Bailey, chair of the Atlanta Stonewall Democrats. About 200 people are expected to attend the fundraiser at the Tribute Lofts SkyPad, which offers a stunning view of the city from the airport to Buckhead. The Stonewall Democrats hope to raise $20,000-$25,000 at the “ENDA Summer Party.” The organization also partners with the Young Democrats of Georgia to host a “Blue Ball” at WETbar Sept. 13.

RECENT MONTHS HAVE OFFERED stark reminders that the HIV/AIDS epidemic continues to take a heavy toll on gay men, and Atlanta’s fall calendar is once again stocked with a variety of HIV/AIDS fundraisers.

PALS Atlanta gets things going on Sept. 14 with its annual “Rubbing Noses” event at Lambert Place in Midtown. Local radio personalities Leslie Fram and Holly Fifer host the canine fashion fundraiser, which offers pet assistance for people living with HIV/AIDS and other long-term illnesses.

Georgia’s drought continues to disrupt large events that usually take place in Piedmont Park, including the annual AIDS Walk, which this year takes place Oct. 19. Due to the drought, AIDS Walk shifts to 10th Street at Grady High School for pre-march speakers and entertainers.

“We’re going to have, for lack of a better word, a block party on 10th Street,” says Beth Costello, director of AIDS Walk Atlanta.

The AIDS Walk itself continues its traditional course along Peachtree Street and through The Prado, ending inside Piedmont Park. Among the people already lined-up to speak at the event are Atlanta spoken word artist Denise Stokes, as well as Leanza Cornette, who in 1993 became the first Miss America to make HIV/AIDS the centerpiece of her service platform.

Also in October, some of the biggest names in tennis — including Andy Roddick, Anna Kournikova, and lesbian legends Martina Navratilova and Billie Jean King — descend on Atlanta for a fundraiser benefiting the Elton John AIDS Foundation and the Atlanta AIDS Partnership Fund. The 16th annual Advanta World Team Tennis Smash Hits takes place Oct. 12 at Kennesaw State University.

THE FALL SCHEDULE ALSO INCLUDES annual Halloween parties hosted by Jerusalem House, MEGA Family Project and the Atlanta Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce, as well as the 34th anniversary of Charis Books & More and the 15th anniversary of Outwrite Bookstore & Coffeehouse.

There are also plenty of other hugely popular annual events in the coming months. The Oct. 12 Garden Party benefits the Atlanta Lesbian Health Initiative, and the locally produced Falltacular “Fire in the Smokies” getaway takes place Oct. 30-Nov. 2 in the Smoky Mountains.

Also adding flavor to the coming months are a Nov. 7 performance by lesbian comic Lily Tomlin at the Georgia Tech Ferst Center; concerts by gay and gay-friendly acts including the Indigo Girls, Janet Jackson, Tegan & Sara and Dolly Parton; the OutlantaCon convention for gay sci-fi fans; and the sixth annual Toy Party, which takes place Dec. 7.
