Brodie ponders City Council run, Conlon back on State House ballot
Sept.
2
came
and
went
without
Steve
Brodie
announcing
a
campaign
to
challenge
Atlanta
City
Councilmember
Anne
Fauver
next
year.
An
anonymous
tip
to
the
political
blog
Peach
Pundit
last
month
said
Brodie
would
announce
his
campaign
on
Sept.
2,
but
Brodie
denied
the
reports.
Since
that
first
round
of
news
coverage,
Brodie
said
several
people
have
encouraged
him
to
run,
but
that
he
had
not
made
up
his
mind.
“Right
now
I
really
haven’t
made
a
decision
about
whether
we
are
going
to
run
or
not,
but
I
am
really
concerned
about
the
financial
condition
of
the
city,”
Brodie
said
this
week.
Brodie,
who
is
gay,
challenged
Fauver,
who
is
also
gay,
for
the
Midtown-based
district
in
2005.
He
lost
by
five
votes,
then
lost
a
protracted
legal
appeal.
Fauver
is
seeking
a
third
term,
Brodie
said
he
is
he
is
interested
in
maintaining
the
culture
and
atmosphere
around
Piedmont
Park
and
Ansley
Mall
if
the
Beltline
project
moves
forward.
That
and
the
city’s
financial
troubles
will
likely
play
a
large
factor
in
his
decision
to
get
into
the
November
2009
race,
he
said.
In
other
political
news,
the
Secretary
of
State’s
office
recently
reversed
itself
on
a
2008
race
when
it
initially
removed
Michelle
Conlon
from
the
ballot
for
the
Nov.
4
election.
Conlon,
an
independent,
initially
fell
51
signatures
short
of
1,027
needed
to
get
on
the
ballot
to
challenge
state
Rep.
Mike
Jacobs
(R-Atlanta)
for
the
State
House
District
80
seat.
The
DeKalb
County
Voter
Registration
Office
re-examined
the
signatures
and
verified
an
additional
99
signatures,
clearing
her
to
run.
Conlon’s
candidacy
was
jumpstarted
by
the
House
Democratic
Caucus
when
fears
arose
of
Keith
Gross’
residency.
Gross,
an
openly
gay
Democrat
and
the
lone
challenger
to
Jacobs,
was
removed
from
the
ballot
in
July
when
officials
ruled
he
did
not
meet
residency
requirements.
